After leaving Ponderosa we spent a few days in Pagosa Springs with Russ' cousin Bill and his wife Carolyn. It is always exciting to see what they have done to their house since our last visit. We drove up into the forest and did a little target practice. Carolyn was sure one of the holes in that paper towel must be hers!

Our next stop before heading home was Durango where we always enjoy looking for wildlife. Not exactly "wildlife", we came across these beautiful Belgian work horses - we had never seen them in that area in years past. We think they are used to pull a stagecoach used for tourist excursions. There seems to be two herds of elk in the pasture land below Missionary Ridge - this one was calmly grazing about 7:30 in the evening.

This is a view of the valley north of Durango looking toward Silverton, taken from the trail along Missionary Ridge. While on a jeep outing last week we came over a rise to see a small herd of buffalo. Obviously, "Big Buff" is the big daddy of the herd! Then, when we got back to camp, found this flock of crows devouring the seed that had fallen from our bird feeder! Not exactly the type birds I was trying to attract but I guess all God's creatures gotta eat.

We were privileged to have a group (200+) of home school alumni in camp last week. Most of them are Christian young adults (20s-30s) and came from all over the U.S. for their 4th annual reunion. They were undoubtedly the best behaved, most courteous group of people we had this summer...and they loved Ponderosa! Their activities were well planned and Christ-centered. Why, they even had an evening of country English dance that was a delight to watch - much like the dance in the movie "Pride and Prejudice."

Their program/schedule book also doubled as a "yearbook" in which they had old and new friends sign. When we walked out of the dining hall to get in our jeep and go back to the RV, they were using it to sign books. Many of them thanked us for all we had done for them, and asked us to sign their yearbook. This is a wonderful organization; if you know individuals who have received their education from home schooling, tell them to check out the website: http://homeschoolalumni.org/

Even though school is back in session, August has been a VERY busy month at Ponderosa. It happened again! About 4:00 yesterday afternoon we had a hailstorm worse than the last one. Hail stones the size of nickels pummeled the campground breaking out skylights on RVs and damaging roofs on buildings - thankfully, the buildings had not yet been repaired since the last storm. Once again, our RV sustained no damage, thank the Lord! The movie below shows some of the action; Nancy tried to narrate but the noise of the hail hitting the top of the motor home drowned her out! We will leave Ponderosa on Aug. 31st; hopefully, this will NOT happen again!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v21.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D30157465630917e3%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331219969%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D22DC88A72737E66BBAA60BB07CD8A902C1574702.4BEF7147261F3BBAA3C30C2C9DAFE0779D05BA5D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D30157465630917e3%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DuyXrsoYG0aEawfUj7wRjtpxarvA&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

And The Fun Continues...

This is the main part of the lobby at The Ponderosa. We've had 3 weeks of these kids - the first 2 groups were younger, extremely noisy, and really made a mess in the dining hall which made clean-up a tedious task. This particular group are high school age, more mature and responsible, and have been careful to not leave messes for the volunteers to clean up. Sadly, a very large percentage of the younger children are on serious medications and have emotional issues -- kept our camp nurse hopping!

One of the things I love about this place is the wildlife. I usually hang bird feeders within the first day or two we arrive. It doesn't take them long to find the goodies! The squirrels and birds share the seed feeder, and the hummers are such voracious eaters that I've already gone through 5 lbs. of sugar making the nectar for their feeders. Every evening after supper we drive a loop road to the west, north and east of the campground. So far we've seen elk, antelope, deer, coyotes and a beautiful gray/silver wolf. (Wolves have recently been reintroduced into Colorado.) Unfortunately, we didn't have our camera with us the night we saw him. Abby was standing on the couch looking out the window and barking like crazy. When I looked to see what was causing the excitement, this little squirrel was trying to make friends with our "garden racoons".

If you watched national news earlier this week, you might have seen that Colorado is having bad weather conditions. On Monday, this "bad boy" touched down less than 10 miles north of the camp; local news reported $161,000,000 in damage. Most of the folks who live here say that tornadoes typically travel and destroy on flat land and rolling hills (which surrounds the camp), so since we are in the mountains it's not likely that we would be hit. But...it doesn't hurt to be prepared! Nevertheless, it was scary! The last 2 days have been bright, sunshiny days and temperatures in the high 70s. Pikes Peak is still snow laden but the snow will be melting rapidly as temperatures continue to rise. We are so blessed to serve the Lord in this beautiful place.

The Ponderosa - Our Home Away From Home

We're back for our second year of running the snack bar at The Ponderosa Baptist Conference Center near Colorado Springs. Fort Carson is nearby and the base calgary, canine unit, and heavy equipment division came to camp to visit with the kids. These kids are the best, most well-behaved groups who come to Ponderosa; their counselors are right on top of everything and the kids do as they are told (guess that's the military influence at home). The first night was spent in Albuquerque. On Sunday on the way to Raton, NM we went by this familar site. Our wildlife count certainly increased! Although we saw a few antelope around Raton, we saw numerous ones on the drive to Monument and the Ponderosa Retreat and Conference Center, our home for the summer.

When we arrived in Monument the temperature was in the low 70s. Late yesterday evening we experienced about 3 inches of hail. It has been raining most of the day and have had a high of 46.
